Project Title: Interpreting Genocide: The Graphic Novel of Rwandan-Montrealer Rupert Bazambanza.

Jessica examined how graphic novelists have engaged with genocidal violence in Rwanda and Cambodia. In Sourire malgré tout, Rupert Bazambanza – a young Rwandan survivor of the 1994 genocide – tells the story of the Rwanga family. They were family friends. Rupert was interviewed in multiple sessions in order to explore the ways that a graphic novel can be a unique form of survivor testimony rather than simply the representation of the experience of others.
